From Script to Stage: Basic Training for Intimacy Directors
The way we direct actors in intimate scenes has shifted enormously in recent years. Without a background in consent and communication, it can be challenging to navigate intimate scenes in the rehearsal room while ensuring a safe environment for all participants. How you lift intimate scenes from the page to the stage determines not only the safety of your performers but its impact on your audience and its contribution to storytelling. This course will show you how safe intimacy practices can lead to dynamic, powerful and electric scenes.
From Script to Stage: Basic Intimacy Training is facilitated by Intimacy Director and arts educator Michelle Ezzy. Across this four-week course, you will:
- Understand the concepts underpinning consent work
- Explore how to create a safe workplace and rehearsal room
- Learn how to break down intimacy in a script
- Discuss how we can empower actors when they perform intimate
- Gain skills in choreographing intimacy for theatre
This course provides a solid foundation in safe intimacy practices, and may act as a pathway for further training. This course is ideally suited to directors, stage managers, choreographers, production managers, producers, secondary and tertiary performing arts teachers, and those who are interested in expanding their skillset to begin working as an intimacy director.
Participants must attend and participate in all four sessions and submit an assessment to receive a Certificate of Completion for this course. Prior learning is not essential; however it is recommended that those intending to pursue further studies or experience as an intimacy director should complete Mental Health First Aid training with an accredited trainer.
